Lumbar Spine Motion in Normal and the Diseased

Abstract
Among the many methods of roentgenographic determination of the Lumbarspine motion, the transparent plastic or paper sheet technique is the one commonly used. This technique has been applied in 13 normal persons and 10 patients with lumbago in their third decade, and 12 patient with degenerative discs in fifth and sixth decade. The range of motion at each segment and the entire lumbar spines was evaluated with the motion roentgenograms obtained in each of them.
1. In the normal control group, the summation of motion of motion at all the lumbar segments was 70 degrees and the motion at each level consecutively from Ll-L2 downward was 11¡Æ, 13¡Æ, 13¡Æ, 17¡Æ, and 16¡Æ respectively. with the percentage of 16%, 18.5%, 18.5%, 24%, and 23%. The greatest motion was noted at the L4-L5 segment.
2. In the patients with lumbago, the total amount of motion at all the segments was 55 degrees. The percentage of the decrease, however, was comparable to that of the normal, indicating that this decrease had resulted from. the proportional restriction of motion at each segment.
3. The degenerated disc group showed the total lumbar motion to be 40 degrees which was the lowest among three groups. The percentage decrease of motion showed that among the five segments the L5-Sl level held the greatest range of motion, 25% of all.
4. The comparative study of the flexion lateral roentgenograms showed that the least anterior concavity was most frequently accompanied with the degenerated desc group.
